Debit card payments run on secure, regulated networks called debit rails. These systems; like NYCE, Pulse, and Star connect directly to a customer’s bank to transfer funds in real time when they enter their debit card PIN. 

NYCE is one of the largest U.S. debit networks. It links ATMs and point-of-sale (POS) terminals, making it possible for cannabis retailers to accept PIN debit card payments without needing Visa, Mastercard, or mobile wallets. NYCE is owned by FIS (Fidelity National Information Services), a major provider of banking technology.

This method avoids the risks, fees, and maintenance of traditional ATMs and cash handling. It’s safer, more affordable, and more convenient for both businesses and customers.

Fintech processors such as AeroPay and CanPay rely on ACH (Automated Clearing House) transactions, requiring customers to download an app and link their bank account. While these options are compliant and cashless, they add friction to the checkout experience.

Dutchie Payments is another ACH-based option but is limited exclusively to dispensaries using the Dutchie POS and e-commerce system. It's not a general-purpose solution.

Settlement & Funding: 

Transactions are auto-batched daily at midnight (CDT) and settled within 48 banking hours.

3-Day Funding Overview: 

Debit card transactions are collected in batches and settled overnight, with funds reaching your bank account within three business days. 

Here's how it works:

• Monday: Customer makes a purchase
• Tuesday: Transaction batch is submitted; bank verifies and allows for reversals or disputes
• Wednesday: Processor clears funds and runs compliance, fraud, and chargeback checks
• Thursday: Funds are deposited into your business bank account
